But this year’s contest is different. Before the starting horn, the stadium screen broadcasts a warning to resist, and an explosion tears through the Elders’ section. The competition becomes more unusual when Slade, one of her rivals, defies tradition and helps her. Questioning her training and his intentions, she has no time to ask because a rebel group attacks and scatters her battalion in different directions.
