I write sci-fi and I usually pick up a word in any language (I speak two fluently and other three so and so) and create something new from there. Other times, I get help from word generators. There are plenty online.
For a fantasy short story I wrote last year in Italian and translated this year in English, I used Tolkien’s style for names. Think about Strider, Underhill all names with a specific meaning in English and in the story. I love playing with words, although I’m no Tolkien, ha! ๐
A friend of mine eats cheerios and speaks a random word while chewing. He says it works for him in creating new names. I haven’t tried yet.
Like most of you, I use Scrivener. I have a single file, called the Bible (no imagination there) where I have a folder organised in books for the series I’m working in. In each folder, there are sketches of the characters, their description (physical and not only). I also created different files for all different races. Then I have a general text file with all the names divided for people, places, race, technical devices, insults (I make them up), food, drinks, drugs. It just occurred to me that I could make more order if I used folders for these things too, instead of having one file text.
For timelines, I use Aeon, so I always know where a character was and how old were they in a specific moment in history. I needed a specific program for this because I created a calendar and time is different in my world.
I also drew a map on paper to have a visual idea of where is everything.
Nice to meet you Deb.
